Lay MinistryBaptism marks entry into our participation into God's mission of restoration and reconciliation, our basic ministry. The ordained ministers -- deacons, priests (or "presbyters"), and bishops -- support the ministry of the baptized. The Covenant we make (or is made on our behalf until we confirm it when we are older), is this: We affirm that we will continue in the apostle's teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers; persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever we fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord; proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ; seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves; strive for justice and peace, and respect the dignity of every human being." (BCP p. 305) From the Book of Common Prayer (p. 855): "The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him whereever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church." "Taking their place in the Church" involves supporting and serving. Some positions in the church are elected (wardens, vestry, treasurer, clerk); some are appointed (committee membership); some are as volunteer, and some are as paid staff. Assistants in worship (liturgical assistants) may require a license from the bishop in addition to clergy permission. (For more information including license information and applications see subpage to left.) More information about lay ministry is available on the lay ministry page of The Episcopal Church website.
